I am not a huge sports fan. That being said, I was very impressed with the new Nike shop on Tauentzienstraße (we’ve mentioned it before, here). Why? Yes, I know it is Nike, and sure, they make cool outfits for working out, but honestly, IF I were to try to engage in any kind of … Read more To be fit – Nike Training Club
“Who the hell is Eike König?” That’s the question that splays itself in big brash letters across your browser when researching the brains behind Studio HORT, the small-scale graphic design studio with big name clients and an in your face, combative visual anti-formula. The question, posed by the man himself as the title of his … Read more Visiting Eike König at Studio HORT
Why did the potato get the munchies? Because it was baked. See, vegetables can be funny too – at least as funny as fruits, cats, internet memes, and jokes about white men not being able to dance. A case in point is We Are Not Gemüsed, the comedy open stage held on Tuesdays at Sameheads bar … Read more We Are Not Gemüsed, stand-up comedy on Tuesday nights
Good food, theatre, and lots and lots of sausages – Kitchen Guerrilla knows how to throw a dinner party with a difference. Following on from the article we ran earlier this year on Kitchen Guerrilla’s WurstGalerie event, I put on my best sausage eating hat and went along to the show. Held at Tempelhof’s Malzfabrik, … Read more My kind of art: the WurstGalerie from Kitchen Guerrilla

With Berlin Fashion week now slowly (but surely) receding from our minds, the next annual winter institution is about to grip the city in the form of the Berlin International Film Festival, better known as the Berlinale. For the uninitiated, the Berlinale is a little bit like the German version of the Oscars and is … Read more Prepare the popcorn, the Berlinale is coming!
If like me you’ve chosen to live in a romantically ill-equipped abode for the Berlin winter – You’ll know exactly what I’m rabbiting on about. Your cellar will look like a blackened Fort Knox with coal bullion stacked as high as your head, your spinal column will most likely be fractured in three places on … Read more Coal Bullion: Cometh die Uhr, cometh der Mann!
Indie messiah Stephen Malkmus & band ‘The Jicks’ are to embark upon another world tour in 2014!. That means us lucky Berliners are entitled to a thick slice of the post-Pavement pie.
His 6th studio LP ‘Wig Out At Jagbags’ is set to be released early next year and by the sounds of the two lead singles, predictably laden with observational randomness and inexhaustible satire, it’s going to be a goody!. As if he were capable of anything else.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Malkmus (47, with a kind of Benjamin Button thing going on) is an extraordinary man. A tireless musician using the modern-day media platform (in his case Domino Recording Co) to his advantage whilst seemingly remaining aloof, underground and very 90’s.
If you’re unfamiliar with his solo work – you can expect all the magic of Pavement’s ‘Brighten the Corners’ or ‘Wowee Zowee’ with, dare I say, a preponderance of prog. The new set up enables Malkmus to utilise his underrated guitar chops. He does this tastefully, of course.
As we know, southeast Berlin is steadily changing from being a neighbourhood known for its Turkish community to a more active, multicultural place, where we can find not only crowded bars but also very good shops. Talking about this change, Bass Cadet Records/Down by Retro (BCR/DBR are the organizers of Neukölln Shopping Nacht), got our … Read more Fashion + Music + People = Down by Retro
