‘The Drummer’ Hitchhikes the World with Just a Drum Set and a Dream
By Allison Krupp . July 7, 2016
You read that title right. It’s the stuff of dreams for us restless, wannabe musicians (we could all start a successful band if we really tried, right?). And a man known now only as “The Drummer,” our modern-day hero, took the plunge in June, hitchhiking or jet-setting or boating through Germany, and then the rest of the world, hailing some of the best drummers along the way.
He requests that these drummers teach him to do one thing, and one thing well: bang a couple sticks on a drum set the correct and most musical way. Too much to ask, and too much to haul? Maybe. It’s too early to tell.
Sure. It doesn’t seem to make a ton of sense. But sense isn’t what we’re scrubbing up for, here in Berlin, and so we welcome this zealous, wacky man into the fold. Taken from the strummings of any great hippie melody, or even the Pied Piper tale itself, this journey of music and woe is as poetic as it gets, friends.
Just look at this joyous photo of our outrageously-good-looking Drummer as he rattles away. No cares. No rent. No girlfriend tying him down. Just a Drummer, a dream, and a set.
And our Drummer sets himself some rather massive goals. Not content to be just “a good drummer”, he wants to drag his drums onstage at some of the world’s biggest music festivals. Last week he took on Roskilde, and he is booked to play Wacken later this summer before moving on to the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
But he isn’t alone in his travels. He’s “Travels with Charley”-ing his way with HUAWEI, instead, documenting every step of his journey with his trusty HUAWEI MediaPad M2. It offers everything he needs to create movies, edit his music, and play back his progress for his online fans to follow. The MediaPad is as essential a piece of his kit as the drums themselves.
