Here’s the Best Place in Friedrichshain to Watch Euro 2016
By Andrew Cottrill . June 8, 2016
Euro 2016 is almost upon us. If you live in Friedrichshain, or have visited F’hain to watch football matches previously, you know what that involves…
…You’re trawling along Simon Dach Strasse, trying to find a spot to cram into in one of those nondescript tourist bars (I call them ‘those orange bars‘). When you finally find a perch, usually next to a family of British holiday-makers just trying to eat their ‘genuine Schnitzel’ in peace, you hear a Mexican-wave of cheers echoing down the street as someone scores, only to discover you picked the one bar with a 10-second delay on its television reception.
Thankfully, this time you’ve a quality alternative. Local Mexican streetfood joint Santa Maria Eastside will be hosting a pop-up restaurant/bar at Keule, Simon Dach Strasse 22 (across from Primitiv), for the duration of the tournament.
So, what does a Mexican streetfood/Euro 2016 football cross-over look like? The pop-up bar will have space for at least 150 football-and-food fans, boasts two big screens (including a huge one inside) and will be showing every game of the competition.
Alongside of that, Santa Maria Eastside will be serving a constantly changing menu of Mexican snack food specials including…
Santa Eastside Euro 2016 Pop-up Menu
Frijoles charros – homemade corn tortilla chips topped with Santa Maria chorizo, beans, cheese, sour cream, jalapeño, onion and coriander – €7
Vegan charros – homemade corn tortilla chips topped with Santa Maria vegan chorizo, beans, jalapeño, onion and coriander – €5
Veggie charros – homemade corn tortilla chips topped with Santa Maria vegan chorizo, beans, cheese, sour cream, jalapeño, onion and coriander – €6
Fries – with herb salt – €3
Chips’n’cheese – fries with melted Monterrey jack cheese – €4.5
Chili cheese fries – veggie or non veggie – fries with chorizo or veggie chorizo, melted cheese and jalapeño – €5.5
They will also take over the bar, offering beer (€3 tap beers, 2 for €5 on bottles), their signature margaritas for €5 and long drinks all through the tournament.
Not being much of a football fan myself (but being a big margarita fan…), I’ll be cheering for Mexico this Euro 2016.
Head down to Keule this Friday at 21:00 for France vs. Romania (scroll down for all fixtures).
