Moon Duo is Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada, a 2009-born project out of Portland, Oregon. Since then, they’ve released seven full-length albums, with one of them—2011’s widely acclaimed Mazes, mixed in Berlin.
Their newest album, Stars are the Light, is a deep-dive into a glittering future-fictional universe, grooving with zoned-out, swaggering vocals, and mechanical, ever-charging rhythms. Organ melodies twinkle in and out, input from the stars, as guitars ripple. The experience is almost organic—far more like a feeling passing over you, churning through your bloodstream and stitching itself between your brain impulses. I suppose in that way it becomes its own sort of drug—as all psychedelia should.
The night is sure to be nourishing—a melodic wave over all of us at Volksbühne. Don’t miss it.
