Most of the time I do not think about how blessed I was being sent to school when I was little, having access to books, being supported by my family and getting prepared for university education. Most of the time I take it all for granted. It is tragic stories like Malala Yousafzai’s fight for education in Pakistan or the very recent horrific abduction of Nigerian schoolgirls by Boko Haram that turn my privileged pink little bubble upside down. And I only start to grasp how many girls and young women are putting their life in danger every day to get a decent kind of education.
Melanie Robalino from Berlin has decided to raise awareness about the value of girls’ education. She has organized the Berlin premiere of the documentary “Girl Rising”. The film follows nine girls fight for the right of education. It is also a worldwide champagne that intends to raise money to support the “Girls Rising Foundation”, whose work is executed by organizations such as CARE USA, UN Foundation’s Girl Up, Partners in Health, Plan International USA, Room to Read, and World Vision. Director of the documentary is Academy Awardnominee Richard E. Robbins, prominent narrators or the film are Cate Blanchett, Priyanka Chopra, Selena Gomez, Anne Hathaway, Salma Hayek, Alicia Keys, Chloë Moretz, Liam Neeson, Freida Pinto, Meryl Streep, and Kerry Washington.
