Concerts in churches are so hot right now. Last month, the Zionskirche in Prenzlauer Berg played host to an exceptional concert by the legendary American minimalist composer Terry Riley and his son, Gyan. On Thursday November 10th, this time at Taborkirche in Kreuzberg, another unique live listening experience is set to unfold within holy surroundings, as Gigi Masin and Lutto Lento showcase their unique ambient stylings for Berlin’s influential Odd Fantastic agency.
Hailing from Venice, Gigi Masin has been involved in his local music scene since the 1970s, participating in TV, stage and radio productions. Known for his music’s delicacy and sincerity, Masin’s approach to production also displays a true dedication to the wants and needs of music, emphasising them over ego and fame. Masin has collaborated on a number of projects with the likes of Templehof, and Gaussian Curve, while a complete list of his musical works can be found here. This very special performance, created specifically for the show in Taborkirche, will be his Berlin debut.
Supporting Masin on the night will be Warsaw-based producer and DJ, Lutto Lento, who has been making music since about 2011. He started with his own tape label, Sangoplasmo, featuring music which varies widely in genre. Everything from experimental to new-age to off-beat house and techno. His music gained wider reach when the British label FTD re-released some of the music from Sangoplasmo. He has since released on another British label, Where To Now?, as well as Proto Sites. He also has his own vinyl/digital label called DUNNO Recordings, which he started in 2014.
Odd Fantastic, the agency promoting the event, are steadily building a strong reputation for forward-thinking artists and performers, both within the more traditional DJ/Club sphere and with bespoke concerts such as this one. After the concert there will be an afterparty at Ohm club in collaboration with Music from Memory and Red Light Radio.
When I asked why they chose the Taborkirche as the location for this event, they explained that the venue just felt in sync with the cosy and relaxed mood of the music, as well as the autumnal tones evident this time of year. The fact that the afterparty in Ohm is but a short jaunt from the church should please those with the energy to dance well into the night, post concert. As Masin himself says, “Some sounds have magic”, and in a space which celebrates resurrection, and a lad that had the knack of turning water into wine, we’re looking forward to having our ears enchanted at this event.
