By Philip Eggersgluess . February 4, 2017

Berlin food author Liora Bels believes that good food is healthy food. In her latest book, THE MIX – A Loving Blend of Plant-Based Recipes, she explains how to create delicious, beautiful, vibrant and healthy cuisine.

We spoke to author, working mum, health food aficionado and one-woman mixing machine, Liora Bels about the inspiration behind her new book and the wonders of ‘Golden Milk’.

Liora, your book ‘THE MIX – A Loving Blend of Plant-Based Recipes’ – how did you come up with the idea?

When it comes to cooking or eating a more healthy plant-based diet, I often hear the words: no time, no ideas, no talent, don’t know how to cook, lack of inspiration.

Being a working mom I know it can be a challenge to find the time to cook an abundant healthy meal yet I want to make feeding my family nourishing and thoughtfully prepared food a priority. I believe, you don’t have to be a chef to cook a delicious, wholesome meal and to take care of yourself with quality organic products. So I came up with recipes that are easy and quick to make – without having to sacrifice nutrients, taste and aesthetics.

I love food and want to create a delicious, beautiful, vibrant and healthy cuisine. THE MIX offers flavorful, nutritious and simple everyday plant-based recipes, incorporating only high-quality products, minimally processed, that I believe help optimize our health, energy and radiance.

The recipes are mainly all made in a high-speed-blender, food processor or even just with your hands – quick and easy. Perfect for everyday life. My mission is to inspire making the right food choices every day and to celebrate natural food. I hope the combination of taste, aesthetics and sharing knowledge about the benefits is the key to finding love for natural food and to taking care of oneself. This book is made for everyone!

Amongst the other great recipes in the book, I noticed one for Golden Milk. Why did you choose to include Golden Milk?

Simply because it’s nourishing, delicious, vibrant and has countless beneficial properties. Further it includes only a handful of ingredients and is easy and quick to make.

Can you tell us a bit about the history of Golden Milk?

The recipe of Golden Milk dates back nearly 4,000 years. Its main ingredient, turmeric (kurkuma), has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine for its outstanding positive effects on health.

Do you think it’s just a trend, or will we see Golden Milk go mainstream?

Yes, it truly is a wonderful drink! Well, as I said it has been used in Indian traditional medicine for centuries for its preventive and therapeutic virtues. I believe anything that is so precious in its benefits and delicious at the same time will last and hopefully accompany us in our daily lives.

“Simply because it’s nourishing, delicious, vibrant and has countless beneficial properties.”

Where else can turmeric be used?

Turmeric is mostly known as an ingredient in curries. Add it to hearty bowl dishes and soups, or make it part of your salad dressings. You can use turmeric in its fresh root form and ground it up yourself, or buy it dried as a powder. Note: Adding black pepper enhances the absorption of turmeric so you can fully enjoy all the wonderful benefits out of the root.

So turmeric has a real medical purpose. Is it then okay to take daily?

Of course! As with all things though, use it in moderation.

When you are not mixing, what is your favourite place to have lunch?

I enjoy eating at home the most and rarely go out to eat. Simply because I enjoy cooking, know what’s inside and can infuse the dishes with lots of love.

Is there anything else you would like to say?

Thank you for spreading the love and consciousness for healthy living and wholesome nutrition. Food makes you feel!
