We Wanted the Funk…And We Got It! George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic at Astra
By John Perye . July 29, 2014
Last night at Astra Kulturhaus, George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic a.k.a. The P-Funk All Stars played an environment steeped in funk.
(Clinton with bassist Lige Curry)
Within Berlin’s sweaty, smoky and trombipulating Astra, Clinton comfortably conducted his band with vigor.
After witnessing countless P-Funk shows around Detroit, the band’s stomping grounds, over the past 10 years, I can confidently say Clinton was extra lively for this Berlin date.
Kendra Foster sang an emotional version of “Sentimental Journey,” a beautiful homage to the late funkateer Belita Woods.
(Michael “Kidd Funkadelic” Hampton)
Michael Hampton a.k.a. Kidd Funkadelic channeled the spirit of Eddie Hazel with a screaming version of “Maggot Brain.”
(Sir Nose D’Voidoffunk and Clinton)
Sir Nose Devoid of Funk tried to shut down the party, but Mr. Clinton would not comply.
(Clinton with Kandy Apple Redd)
The next generation of funk, Clinton’s granddaughters, Kandy Apple Redd.
Berliners enjoyed the funk side by side with the originator.
