Piano Prog Pop has arrived all the way from Vancouver with The Zolas! With them they bring songs from their third release, Swooner. Produced by the band themselves, their most personal record thus-far, Swooner consists of experimental pop and is not ashamed to show its ’90s influences. Don’t miss out on Canada’s best kept secret as The Zolas take the stage tonight, in Berlin.
BLY spoke with Zack from The Zolas:
When, where and how did it all begin for The Zolas?
2006, Vancouver, Canada, two boys decided to break up their first band because it wasn’t fun anymore. They spent the next year just being friends instead of business associates and out of that came a bunch of songs. A label head offered to let them record those songs and that sounded like a good time so they said yes.
How would you describe your music for those who have yet to hear it?
Every album is different but with this album we wanted to combine ’90s dance pop and alternative music. In some ways, we failed with surprising results and in some ways we REALLY succeeded.
Last year the band played the Reeperbahn Festival. How did that go?
One wild night resulted in being inducted into the journeyman carpenter’s (Gesellen) guild, so I’d say it went rather well.
Will the February 9th show at Musik & Frieden be the band’s first show in Berlin?
No, we played once last year at Urban Spree. One of our favourite shows of all time.
Anything you want to check out while in Berlin?
In the 2 days we were here last time we soaked in all the typical stuff: cheap beer in Kreuzkölln, Bunker museum, club mate, photoautomats, doner kebaps, the Reichstag/Tiergarden/Holocaust Memorial, chicken near Goerlitzer park, Madame Claude’s, Hotel Michelberger, karaoke. But this visit we need some suggestions. What’s the next step?
