Ready to get IN BLOOM with COMBINE @ Kantine am Berghain

By John Perye . March 10, 2016

It can be easy to take for granted the enormous amount of international talent that comes into Berlin. Just think about it. On any given night in this city you can watch a band from Australia or Japan or Canada or Spain or Antarctica. Wait, Antarctica, you ask? Well assuming a band is there, chances are they’d probably end up playing Berlin at one time or another. The point is, you’d never have to leave here to get a sense of what others have been up to in all corners of the vast world of music. The band Combine is an example of this very premise, coming from Israel but now based in Berlin, they’re ready to show you what they’ve got.

BLY spoke with Combine ahead of their Berlin show:

Let’s start off with a little history about Combine. When, where and how did it all start?

Well, to make a long story short, we all met each other between 2008 and 2009 in Israel, and we clicked from the very beginning. It wasn’t long before we recorded our first album, ‘For a Moment’, that was released in 2011. Back then we were five in the band, having another guitarist. After touring in Israel for almost a year, we decided to write another album and fly to Europe to chase our dream, get a van and tour with it, get out of our comfort zone and see what’s waiting out there. It was then when our dear, former guitarist, Steven decided he’s staying in Israel, so we wrote our second album, ‘GO GO GO!’, just the four of us.

How would you describe your music for those who have yet to hear it?

For some reason, I find it quite hard to define our music ’cause it is definitely a mix of different styles and genres but, to answer the question, I would say melodic pop with a ’90s rock ‘n’ roll attitude.

How did the band end up in Berlin?

In a way, it was almost as if we were drawn to Berlin. This city symbolizes freedom, art, creativity. Because and thanks to its history, something unique and magical grew in Berlin. It is hard to resist a place like that ☺

Last year saw the release of Go Go Go!, the group’s second album and with that came an extensive tour, playing 120 concerts in nine countries. How was that whole experience?

We’ve never performed so much in our lives! It’s crazy, each tour was special and brought different challenges, amazing moments and great memories that we get to keep forever. Since we’ve worked so much the past two years, it’s easy to miss that moment when you realize that you’re actually touring around Europe in a van, seeing all these beautiful cities, countries, nature, meeting the most kind people along the way. Exactly like we wanted. It’s incredible and we feel very fortunate.

In Bloom is an event taking place on March 17th in Kantine am Berghain. What is in store for the night?

CRAZY FU***NG CRAZINESSSSSS!!! In store for that night is unstoppable energy from the stage to the crowd and back! It has been a LONG while since our last full band show here in Berlin and we literally can’t wait! We’re going to play some new songs and introduce our new and AMAZING bass player, Sam.

Is there anything in particular about Berlin that really amazes you?

The freedom, the diversity, the rhythm and the fact that every day you discover a new place/venue/park/street/man/woman that you had no idea existed.

Are you familiar with Israel’s graffiti collective, Broken Fingaz Crew? Have you seen their work around Berlin?

Yesss and it’s absolutely AMAZING!!!
