Puschenfest: No Headliners. Edgy Weirdness. Killer Indie Music.

By Allison Krupp . November 5, 2018

Puschenfest assembles a stunning selection of indie artists for two days of music on November 16 and 17.

According to one of the festival organizers, Andreas Oberschelp of music promoter Puschen, the colorful lineup “includes the first Berlin appearance of the French 7-piece indie garage band The Limiñanas, UK twee-pop youngsters Girl Ray, Toronto’s Meg Remy with her funky feminist big-band project U.S. Girls, the dark folk beauty of Circuit des Yeux and Scout Niblett, Serbia’s coolest noise-rock band Repetitor, and the Swiss psychedelic indie-disco trio Klaus Johann Grobe, amongst many others.”

Also, I’m delirious with excitement to spot Ought, the Montreal weirdos who recently tossed out the brilliantly strange post-punk EP, Four Desires, this past August.

However, Oberschelp states that Puschen is committed not to uphold a single, big headliner, “even though it’s easier to sell tickets” with one. According to him, all artists are equal at Puschenfest.

Women-led indie rock abounds at Puschenfest.

Puschenfest upholds a commitment to female musicians. This is on-brand with the Puschen mission. Just this week, for example, they’re hosting Snail Mail, one of the youngest female indie rock gods of the previous few years (if you haven’t investigated her newest album, Lush, or burned through endless plays of her single, Thinning, from her first EP, then you have some work to do), and also boast Mint Field, Shannon Lay, and Jessica Pratt later this month.

A new era of Puschenfest.

Puschenfest is held at Festsaal Kreuzberg, a venue that Puschen has had a long-standing relationship with. Back between 2010 and 2013, Puschenfest played out at the old Festsaal. After the fire, Puschenfest fizzled out for a few years, before finding fresh life with Festsaal’s new venue.

For the festival, Puschen will craft a second stage in the main room, creating a sort of ping-pong effect between the acts for fewer breaks between sets. “No 45-minute-changeover-boredom to be expected,” Oberschelp promises. Also, on Friday evening, there will be a third stage in the Kaminzimmer, for—what else?—a bit of raucous karaoke, hosted by The Chop magazine.

When asked what he’s most excited about regarding Puschenfest, Oberschelp tells me it’s a difficult question. After all, Puschen is committed to “artists you can’t categorize easily. Who have this weird edge and that mystery you can’t put into words.” However, he is incredibly excited for Cindy Lee, who is “Patrick Flegel, who sang and played guitar in this amazing band WOMEN in Canada. When they split up the rest of the band formed VIET CONG, and Patrick came up with his drag-queen pseudonym Cindy Lee. It sounds like from another world. He’s a genius.”

Sounds like a fucking blast to me.
