Get your Grunge, Punk and Garage Fix at FAVE RAVE this October

By Kitty Doherty . October 22, 2019

Get down to Urban Spree on October 26th for your grunge, garage and punk fix, featuring four live bands and DJs all night long.

FAVE RAVE has been feeding Berlin delicious rock ‘n’ roll morsels for over 3 years now. They describe themselves as “Berlin’s hot-spot for punk, new wave, garage, psych-rock and independent rock” and have built a reputation for pulling exciting international live acts into this glittering city.

This October’s line-up includes DIRTY FENCES (‘NYC Rock & Roll’), Brower (‘Fuzzy Junkshop Glam from NYC/Ex-Nancy’), Jealous (‘Sickk Grrl Punk from Berlin’) and 24/7 DIVA HEAVEN (‘Berlin’s Riöt Görl Knockout’), and DJ sets from DJ-team Poppoline Paschefrank.

FAVE RAVE

We spoke to each of the performing bands ahead of the October show. Here’s the inside scoop.

DIRTY FENCES: ‘Fast rock ‘n’ roll with a little bit of punk and power-pop mixed in.’

DIRTY FENCES is Max Roseglass, Max Hiersteiner, Max Comaskey (is being named Max a prerequisite for joining the group?) and Jack Dave. Their music is punchy, loud and gritty and if you’re an Oh Sees, Ty Segall or Ramones fan, this one’s for you.

Having just released a brand new singles LP, ‘Hand Pickled Melodies’, they’re currently on a European tour, culminating at Urban Spree. They love playing in Berlin “because the people of this city seem to really understand our music and appreciate what we do.

The band plays regular live shows across NYC (including alongside The Mystery Lights) and have earned the title of ‘NYC’s favourite Rock N Roll Hard Workin Band’. This show is “particularly special” for the group because they play alongside Brower, “who are our cousins from NYC and they’re so good, it will be YOUR pleasure to see them!

Brower: ‘A glitter-encrusted fuzzbox’

Brower is the fuzzy, punky, riff-y solo project of Nat Brower. As DIRTY FENCES end theirs, Brower’s European tour begins at Urban Spree.

They characterise their sound as “a glitter-encrusted fuzzbox plugged into a chainsaw coming out of a Vox amp made of cotton candy“, and this can hardly be called hyperbole when you watch the simultaneously disturbing and delightful music video for their (incredibly catchy) song, ‘Hacksaw’.

Expect T. Rex at their glam rock height, with a nod to Zamrock. And expect to get your wiggle on too – this is real-cool-time music that’s perfect for dancing too.

Jealous: ‘We like dirty guitars and a ridiculous amount of reverb.’

Berlin-based 3-piece Jealous should be on at least a few ‘ones to watch’ lists by now. They play Urban Spree in the midst of a pretty busy year, having already played alongside Death Valley Girls, Amyl and The Sniffers and The Underground Youth, and they’ll play Synästhesie Festival in November alongside with huge acts including Deerhunter, Stereolab and Black Lips.

Despite this impressive trajectory, the band (Paz Bonfil, Adi ‘Dane Joe’ and Alice Huet) are fairly new, with their debut EP ‘What’s Your Damage’ appearing on Baby Satan Records in June 2019.

Like most sane people, these ladies like “dirty guitars and a ridiculous amount of reverb“. They define their music as “loud, sticky, dirty, slippery, existential, confused, miserable, irresistible, relatable, absurd, passionate and dogs howling at the moon.

Their tracks veer between distorted stoner soundscapes, heavy, snarling post-punk, and the energy of your favourite garage rockers. If you’re a fan of The Cramps, The Gun Club, or of general whirlwinds of sophisticated fuzzy darkness, then be sure to catch them later this month.

24/7 DIVA HEAVEN: ‘We like nice people and hard-rockin’ kids!’

Three-piece 24/7 DIVA HEAVEN also hail from the dark, stark streets of Berlin. And, like Jealous, they have amassed quite a following, despite being a fairly new band. They’ve recently played Rock’n Bowl last month, Up In Smoke festival as well as Berlin’s Desertfest back in May, and are set to tour with fuzzy noise-rockers Hathors in November.

All three members (Kat on guitar and vocals, Karo on bass and Mary on drums) come from the stoner rock scene, but they call themselves simply a ‘rock band’, because they “don’t want to be stuck in a specific genre. Heaviness is really important to us soundwise, and this makes our sound different compared with the ‘usual’ punk bands.

Berlin is not the ‘Holy Grail’ when it comes to live shows, but we are looking forward to this one! Every single band has its own style and sound – it’s a very tasty and diverse package. All of the acts are outstanding in what they are doing somehow and this is going to be a killer night.
