Support Berlin at the European Street Food Awards

By Andrew Cottrill . September 29, 2017

The first ever European Street Food Awards final is coming to Berlin this weekend, and we deserve in win.

It ain’t about race. It ain’t about colour or creed. It’s about street food. It’s about paying 6 bucks for a bit of food and being the best. Between September 30-October 1 at Arena/Hoppetosse, the European Street Food Awards will crown its champion.

Butter Bronson won the Berlin heat and we all know why – their buttermilk fried chicken fillets remind me of my childhood in the deep south of America. And I’m from England. That’s how good they are. And whilst they are going up against some of Europe’s best street food vendors, we believe they can win it.

Qualifying rounds of the European Street Food Awards have been going on all over Europe this summer. They’ve whittled down the huge array of the best street food this continent has to boast into a few finalists, eager to take the title. And looking at the finalists, it shows just how international street food is – the world’s favourite delicacies getting packed into vans in forecourts all around Europe.

Here’s a list of this weekend’s combatants:

★ L’Agosarada by Contrast restaurant (ESP): This gourmet hot spot in Sabadell, just north of Barcelona, has taken on the challenge of offering high-quality street food adaptations of a fine dining menu. Like the sourdough sandwich with sardines, spicy pimento, roast peppers and edamame.

★ Amsterdam Good Cookies Stroopwafels (NED): The pride and joy of any Dutch sweet tooth, the stroopwafel, is charging for Berlin in a bright red fire truck. Be sure to hit up these friendly waffle masters for your hit of chewy buttery caramel goodness.

★ Baked in Brick (GB): Lee Desanges cooks outstanding 24-hour marinated chicken tikka over charcoal under the bonnet of a 1964 Mini Cooper. The winner of the 2016 British Street Food Awards serves it in a naan style flatbread which he cooks in a wood-fired oven on the back of the Mini. Yum!

★ Butter Bronson’s (GER): Hailing from Ireland, gastro wizards Butter Bronson’s bring with them their buttermilk marinated fried chicken. Their delicate brioche buns are stuffed with top-notch additions like streaky bacon, chipotle mayo and Irish mature red cheddar. Grand!

★ Дагестанская лавка or Dagestanskaya lavka (RUSSIA):
Dagestanskaya lavka is all about the chudu: Dagestanian pies made with unleavened dough, filled with things like beef or mushrooms or soft cheese, fried, then buttered. It’s the traditional pastry eaten by folk in Caucasus mountains, except Dagestanskaya are pimping them up for modern city tastes.

★ Dim Sum SU Street Food, popups and Events (GB):
Hong Kong-born Sue Chiu-Fan Lee worked in the family food business as soon as she was old enough to reach the till. She’s now all grown up, and bringing us her amazing and authentic dim sum, gua bao, wantons and spring rolls.

★ Heaven Street Food (SE): Burgers, burgers, burgers in all their variations. These patty-jockeys from Sweden have taken it upon themselves to push the humble burger to its fullest potential: pulled pork, sharp rocket, crispy onions, all wedged between the airiest of brioche buns.

★ I love Mauldasch (GER): The hallowed Swabian dumpling, or maultasche, is given a generous overhaul with these gastronomic patriots. Like their maultaschen burger with caramelized onions and strips of crispy bacon.

★ Jones ice cream (GER): The little mint green Citroen truck is back, serving buttery cookies and ice creams like mojito, raspberry yoghurt & meringue puffs, chai latte and dark chocolate.

★ Porcobrado (ITA): It’s all things pork, porkish, and porkesque with these friendly grill masters from Tuscany, Italy. Not only do they specialize in the prized Cinta Senese breed, they also produce all their meat in their own bio-dynamic farms nestled in the Tuscan hillside.

★ Быков Бар or Bykov Bar (RUSSIA): The Kaliningrad team narrowly beat Дагестанская лавка (The Chudu) to the judges’ vote with their lightly-salted Murmansk codfish and potatoes. Come and taste it — you’ll understand why.

★ Tiugu by À La Main (FRA): From their two locations in Paris’ Montorgeuil area (one wine bar and one deli), these Corsicans have set out to bring the authentic flavours of their island home to the French capital and beyond. Among their favourites is the crazy delicious Corsican pork belly sandwich with coriander and spicy pimento sauce.

★ Triller’s GenussManufaktur (GER): Our favourite South German schnitzel masters will join us in Berlin with their modern take on all the classics. Think schnitzel bites with creamy chanterelle sauce or truffle fries with tomatoes, beef, and basil.

★ Wingmans (GB): What makes a chicken wing a winner? Well maybe we should start with the sticky, crispy fried buttermilk kind of chicken brought to us by the UK’s first self-proclaimed ‘authentic wingery.’ Now add some truffle mac n’ cheese balls and you’ve got a sure recipe for sticky fingers.
