‘Whispers from the Light’ Art Exhibition
July 10 @ 19:00 - July 17 @ 19:00Free
Mary J. Leen is a visual artist from county Kerry, Ireland working with stained glass and painting. After a three month artist residency in CoGalleries Berlin, she has produced a unique body of artwork that must be seen. Leen’s work, in essence, stems from colour and light and is expressed through figurative imagery that embodies mystery and intrigue. The artist is influenced by the majesty and beauty of her Kerry, but has opened her practice to the rich cultural life of Berlin.
The theme of this exhibition of paintings was inspired by the writings of Viktor Frankl through his book ‘Man’s Search for Meaning’. His wife Tilly was killed on the historic night of broken glass in Berlin but, it was the image of her face that kept him sane in Auschwitz. The focus was on beauty.
In this exhibition Leen explores a fictitious narrative of a woman (Tilly) trapped in a mysterious stained glass matrix/ world. This psychological exploration of Tilly’s new world is presented in an explosion of colour. The work is vibrant and references the rich colours of glass but also has subtle undertones of loneliness and isolation. The style of the work varies from traditional to the abstract but is consistent in its bold colour pallete.
This work is multi dimensional and it would be fair to say that there is also an element of the ‘life imitating art’ whereby one could make references to the artist herself and her background working as a stained glass artist for 10 years in Ireland.
