Vernissage Vanishing Berlin – Documents of Transition 2009 – 2018
December 6 @ 19:00 - 22:00Free
City centres being sold out, underground scenes and neighbourhood identities being displaced, the associated underlying feelings of loss; all these are worldwide phenomena. Today the faces of many cities are characterised by soulless architecture, conformity and surging rents.
Since 2009 Alexander Steffen takes photographs of transient landmarks all over the city, documenting the process of change within the urban environment. Vanishing Berlin captures the places that we will
remember wistfully, though we did not think we would ever miss them. Focusing mainly on wastelands, storefronts and brick walls. These places characterise Berlin, but equally they are vanishing at an unprecedented pace.
With the exhibition at the gallery Silber & Salz located at the Holzmarkt Area, where one of the most extraordinary new building projects in Berlin has just been realized, Alexander Steffen presents his works in one of the epicentres for the discussion about the future of the city.
The exhibition is for all Berlin lovers. For natives, newcomers and tourists. For photography and art freaks. For historians, melancholics and urban developers. For beatniks, hipsters and flâneurs. For victims and perpetrators of gentrification. In Berlin and elsewhere. And last but not least for those who are still in search of an extraordinary Christmas present. Many of the exhibits shown are offered for less than € 100. Parallel to the exhibition, a cozy Christmas market takes place on the wood market area.
The exhibition is open until the 25th of January 2019: In general the gallery is open Wednesday – Saturday from 2pm to 8pm. Due to production times may change. Dates by appointment are welcome: [email protected] · +49 171 6998792
