Moabit might just be the central Berlin district you’ve explored the least. Clue: it’s that one you ride the bus through on the way to Tegel Airport. But, there’s a very real reason for foodies to head there. And it’s called the Arminiusmarkthalle Moabit.

For a long time, Markthalle Neun has been Berlin’s most famous Markthalle – being the testing ground for many of Berlin’s culinary trends, the incubator for new restaurants and the birthplace of the food truck movement. But, maybe it’s time we moved onto the next thing. And, Arminiusmarkhalle’s original designation was Markthalle 10… so I guess that works quite nicely.

Arminiusmarkthalle has a very familiar layout to Markthalle Neun fans – both inside and out – but none of the tourist crush, hustle and bustle or that ‘half a plate of food for €9’ ethos. Instead, it’s a much more dignified and classy place with a greater emphasis on sitting down, being comfortable and enjoying food with friends. Aside from the many eateries there, there are all sorts of nooks and crannies for you to sit in, all immaculately decorated in different themes and waiting for you to take over with a group for the afternoon.

It’s also a much more German affair (old Arminius himself would approve), what with Moabit having so far escaped much of the gentrification we all know and love. The remaining market stalls in the front half of the market have probably existed longer than you or I, and sell all staples of Germany, from wurst all the way to kohlrabi. These stalls stand in contrast to the eateries Arminiusmarkthalle has to offer – with modern turns like Julia Bosski’s Polish Thursday Dinners supper club, imports like Bite Club favourites Pignut BBQ with their famous American smoke house, and traditional dining spaces like Die Mutter aller Tische and the second incarnation of Prenzlauer Berg’s Der Fischladen, serving some of Berlin’s best fish & chips and an extraordinary ‘Berliner Bouillabaise’.

The Markthalle also has a range of speciality bars – wine, cocktails and more – and often puts on special events and live music, turning the building into a night spot. And its interior and atmosphere are impressive enough to warrant a drink or two, even if you’re not in the mood to eat.

So next time you’re travelling through Moabit – maybe on the way back from Tegel airport – why not stop into the Arminiusmarkthalle? Only joking, this place is actually worth finding Turmstrasse on your U-Bahn map for.
