Is yoga the cure for all Berlin’s vices? Berlin Yoga Conference 2019 believes so.
A year ago, I attended a pop-up event giving a small sample of what Berlin Yoga Conference would offer. Back then, I had a lovely chat with Anastasia Shevchenko about how non-yoga fans could actually join the event, which would take place this year – from the 24th – 26th of May.
The festival takes place this coming weekend, and I’m here to tell you why you should join Berlin Yoga Conference. First, you should ask yourself these questions:
- Do you want a healthier lifestyle so you can put up with Berlin parties?
- Do you want a healthier lifestyle because you want quit Berlin partying?
- Do you want a healthier lifestyle because, well, you are settling down and having babies?
- Do you want a healthier lifestyle because, well, you always had it and you are an evolved being?

Berlin Yoga Conference is split into two different programs for two different audiences:
The Conference Program is aimed at those who already have experience in yoga, and will consist of masterclasses led by teachers from all over the world.
Some of the headliners of the event are Sat Bir Khalsa, who is a Harvard professor and has been fully engaged in scientific research into the efficacy of meditation and yoga practices since 2001. He’s practised yoga himself since 1971 and is a Kundalini-certified teacher, taught by the master Yogi Bhajan.
There is also Ambra Valo, who used to be a principal ballerina with the Birmingham Royal Ballet and used Yoga to heal the many injuries occured through a strict ballet training. She has trained with Ana Forest and Dharma Mitra, who created the Dharma Yoga which she will be teaching. She regularly trains athletes and performers to rethink and reshape the way they train themselves.
Yogacharya Lalit holds a Masters degree in yoga education and brings a modern approach to the Ashtanga method. Lalit was initiated by Swami Veda Bharti of the Himalayan tradition in 2003. He has spent nearly a decade studying numerous traditional styles and disciplines of yoga at various ashrams in North and South India.
Esther Ekart, founder of Ekart Platform in the Netherlands, was one of the first teachers in Yoga to question body alignment. She decrees that yoga is not about finding the perfect shape, but rather the perfect fit for your body, and that everyone is different in their own way. Therefore, practices can vary widely from person to person.
Before you start to feel a bit useless about your lifestyle, cheer up – you can join the Festival Program!
The Festival will welcome anyone, regardless of their yoga experience. Classes will be taught mostly by local Berlin teachers – meaning, if you liked one, you get to continue practising after the festival with them… if you’d like.
And since we are here talking about new beginnings, the Festival Program will also have meditation classes/lectures with everything you ever wanted to know but were too afraid to ask.
Besides the more chilled and relaxed workshops, there will also be training sessions for those of us who cannot stand still, like Combi Yoga with Pilates, Yoga Fusion Classes and some other options by Run Base Berlin and John and Jane Soulbase, where can work up a blissed-out sweat.
Last but not least: families are more than welcome, and kids under 12 years old do not pay entrance. Plus, the little ones get to picnic in the outside area, browse the market place and do some DIY workshops – how cute is that?
