Street Artist ALANIZ Premieres “La Calle Es Un Espejo” at OPEN WALLS Gallery

Street artist Alaniz swaps his trademark grand murals and roller bombing for “La Calle es un Espejo,” or “The street is a mirror”—a series of rather intimate oil portraits. This event, his first solo forage into the Berlin art scene at OPEN WALLS Gallery, begins September 10.

And this transition from grand walls to up-close-and-personal seems natural for the street artist—a man used to roller bombing quickly and darting back down the street, becoming another of the many “invisible people” on which his collection is based. These, the people on the margins of society, are protagonists of the “La Calle es un Espejo” story. These are the people his murals communicate to; and this—his solo show—attempts to make eye contact, fuel understanding, and say the words: “I see you. I know you exist.”

As Alaniz says: “If you want to paint the streets, it’s pretty much essential to actually know the streets. Then you should at least have an idea about who you’re talking to, and what you want to communicate. Every person shares a unique and different kind of knowledge with you, I truly believe that.”

Alaniz’s paintings—including a limited edition print, released at the opening on Thursday—are like soft artistic translations of his rather loud and explosive murals. As he says: “When you’re in a crowded, big space, you literally have to shout into someone’s ear to make yourself heard. In a small room, though, there’s no need to scream—you can talk softer and generally be a nicer person.”

Lean in to really “see” these lost souls and know Berlin streets like never before with Alaniz’s intimate oil portraits at OPEN WALLS on September 10 through September 26.
