Saturday 19th November

Brant Bjork @ Columbia Theater

Kyuss were and always will be one of the greatest desert rock bands. Their dusty juggernaut sound roared through the early ’90s and changed alternative music forever. Since disbanding in 1995, the former members of Kyuss have gone on to unleash their own interpretations of the desert on the world. Guitarist Josh Homme in particular has found huge amounts of success with Queens of the Stone Age. Enough about that guy – of all the post-Kyuss endeavors, drummer Brant Bjork’s music is by far the most compelling. He wears the desert on his sleeve and you can hear the wide open dusty plains of the Palm Desert in his music. Catch this legend of stoner rock on Saturday at Columbia Theater.

JAW Family Celebrate 10 Years @ Prince Charles

JAW Family celebrate 10 years of putting on excellent and diverse nights in Berlin with a big party. They’re pulling out all the stops and making the kind of party that’ll usher the next 10 years in in style. Calling it a ‘family reunion’, you’ll see some familiar names amongst the packed lineup of DJs and bands. Don’t miss eclectic record collector Giles Peterson’s vinyl jazz set and Dutch ‘computer jazz’ musician Jameszoo live in concert. As usual, Kreuzberg’s Prince Charles is the place to be. Sundays have no right to be this fun.

The Necks @ Funkhaus

Another day, another celebration. The best (and only) part about getting old is the parties you can throw to mark your march towards the grave. Anyway, Australian experimental jazz band The Necks are putting on a 30th anniversary gig at the legendary Funkhaus near Rummelsburg. The Necks will play their grand piano-led moody jazz styles in the iconic main hall of this former radio broadcasting house. Aside from the excellent music, this is the perfect excuse to have a nose around one of Berlin’s most interesting buildings.

Wymond Miles & Bikini Jesus @ Schokoladen

Speaking of moody music – Wymond Miles, guitar player for The Fresh & Onlys, knows a fair bit about creating a mood. His intimate new album Call By Night is the perfect mix of Nick Cave-esque high drama and baroque folk sounds. Miles paints pictures of small town America with his music and fragile voice. With his band in tow, Wymond Miles is currently on tour around Europe and is calling in at Mitte’s Schokoladen this Wednesday.

Hooton Tennis Club – Cassiopeia

Hooton Tennis Club are one of the best indie rock bands in the UK at the moment. It’s that simple. With unnervingly good melodies and a real sense of fun about them, HTC are currently riding a wave of success with the recent release of their second album Big Box of Chocolates. Having worked with Edwyn Collins (of Scottish post-punk band Orange Juice) and Bill Ryder-Jones (of The Coral) in the past, they’re clearly doing something right. The four piece are live in Friedrichshain’s Cassiopeia this Thursday.
